The bridge, which had been closed for almost four years, collapsed around 2 am.

A portion of a historic bridge on the Ganga connecting Kanpur and Unnao, built during the British period, fell into the river in the early hours of Tuesday, locals said.

The bridge, which had been closed for almost four years, collapsed around 2 am. No untoward incident was reported due to the incident, they said.

Locals claimed that the bridge near the Ganga ghat was built in 1874 by the Avadh and Rohilkhand Railway Limited Company in the Shuklaganj area of Unnao district.

Ashu Awasthi, a local, said, “A portion between two pillars of the bridge fell into the Ganga after 2 am. No one was hurt as the bridge was closed for traffic.” Another local, Panda Raju, said the bridge was closed in 2021 after cracks appeared.

“At that time, it was known through the media that deep cracks were found in rooms 2, 10, 17 and 22 from the Kanpur side, due to which the administration completely closed the bridge on April 5, 2021,” he added.

As the portion of the bridge collapsed in the Ganga, a number of locals made their way near the spot and made videos of the structure. The clips and photographs of the structure soon found their way to social media.

While there was no immediate statement from any government body over the matter, Krishna Kumar, who lives along the riverbank, said some officers came to the site in the morning in a Lucknow-registered vehicle.

“They went near the broken part and left after some time,” Mr Kumar claimed.

The dog fatally attacked 90-year-old Mohini Trivedi last Friday. The matter came to light on Wednesday after its owner, Dheer Prashant Trivedi, a mechanical engineer by profession, submitted a request to the veterinary department of Kanpur Municipal Corporation (KMC), seeking a nod to hand over the dog to the family.

  • Family Of 5 Feared Dead In Kanpur Building Fire: Cops

Kanpur Building Fire: According to police, neighbours first noticed huge flames and thick smoke emanating from the building on Sunday night and alerted fire station and police.

A 45-year-old man and his wife died in a massive fire that broke out at a five-storey building in Chamanganj area of Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur, police said on Monday.

Huge flames engulfed the entire building located in the Prem Nagar area. The five-storey structure houses a shoe manufacturing factory on its first and second floors, they said.

The police said that seeing the intensity of the blaze the couple’s three daughters — Sara (15), Simra (12), and Inaya (7) — are also feared dead.

The bodies of Mohammad Danish and his wife Nazneen Saba (42) were recovered from the fourth floor of the building, officials said.

They said that it took firefighters hours to gain access to the fourth floor, where the couple’s bodies were discovered.

According to police, neighbours first noticed huge flames and thick smoke emanating from the building on Sunday night and alerted fire station and police.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Seesmau) Manjay Singh said an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire.

“While the exact reason remains unclear, initial suspicions point towards a possible short circuit or faults in the internal wiring, potentially originating from the floors where the shoe factory was operating,” the ACP said.

“The fire led to blasts in a couple of domestic LPG cylinders that worsened the situation,” he added.

Efforts to completely extinguish the blaze are underway, the officials said, adding that people from over half a dozen buildings nearby have been evacuated to insure their safety.

  • Tigress, 4 Cubs Die After Consuming Poisoned Cow, Hunt For Owner On

In a deeply concerning incident, the unnatural death of a tigress and her four cubs, likely due to poisoning, had come to light on Thursday.

The forest and police authorities have launched a search on Friday for the owner of the cow in connection with the death of a tigress and her four cubs in the Male Mahadeshwara Hills Wildlife Sanctuary in Karnataka’s Chamarajanagar district.

In a deeply concerning incident, the unnatural death of a tigress and her four cubs, likely due to poisoning, had come to light on Thursday.

Initially, it was reported that the tigress and three cubs had died. However, authorities later confirmed that the tigress and four cubs had died under unnatural circumstances.

The carcasses of the tigress and three cubs were discovered in the Meenyam forest area, within the Hoogyam range of the sanctuary.

According to sources, the tigress had killed a cow and dragged it into the forest. She and three of her cubs had partially consumed the meat. It is suspected that local villagers, upon finding the carcass of the cow, poisoned it. The tigress and cubs are believed to have returned to the kill and died after consuming the poisoned meat.

Following the incident, veterinary doctors conducted the post-mortem of the four on Friday. The post-mortem of the tigress was conducted the previous day. All procedures were carried out in accordance with the guidelines of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA).

The authorities have also recovered the carcass of the cow killed by the tigress and are working to identify its owner. Preliminary investigations suggest that local cattle owners may have poisoned the carcass.

BJP State President B.Y. Vijayendra responding to the development, stated in Friday, “The news of the death of five tigers, including a tigress, in the sacred hills of Male Mahadeshwara — a place where tigers are worshipped as the divine vehicle of Lord Mahadeshwara — is deeply shocking, inhumane, and has caused distress to the devotees.”

“If poisoning is the cause of these deaths, it is a most heinous and condemnable act. I urge the investigation team constituted by the government to swiftly uncover the truth and bring the culprits to justice,” he stated.

“The awareness that the survival of humankind depends on the conservation of wildlife must spread further. Awareness programmes about forests and wildlife conservation must be conducted among people living in the forest fringes. The government should launch a widespread awareness campaign to promote the idea that every wild animal is a friend of human society and a national asset. In particular, the tiger population is a proud identity and heritage of Karnataka’s forests,” Vijayendra said.

He appealed to the government to pay special attention to the protection of tigers. He said, “The responsibility of tiger conservation lies with all of us. The government must initiate special priority programmes for tiger protection by effectively utilising the Central government’s schemes. Moreover, special attention must be given to the protection and safety of tigers, and I strongly urge the government to act in this regard.”

Addressing media persons in Bengaluru on Thursday, Forests, Ecology, and Environment Minister Eshwar Khandre announced that an investigation has been ordered into the incident and officials have been directed to submit a detailed report within three days.

The probe will be conducted by the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF).

“Karnataka stands second in the country in terms of tiger population, with 563 tigers. It is deeply saddening to learn about the death of a tigress and her three cubs in a state known for its conservation efforts,” Khandre said.

The Male Mahadeshwara Hill Wildlife Sanctuary is spread across 906 square kilometres and is home to a variety of wildlife animals, including tigers, elephants, leopards and others.

  • Amul vs Nandini: Politics Over Dairy Brands Heats Up, Again, In Karnataka

The Amul vs Nandini issue sparked controversy ahead of the 2023 election, with the opposition accusing the BJP of trying to undermine Nandini by backing Amul.

The Karnataka government has been criticised by the opposition for allowing Gujarat-based dairy brand Amul to open kiosks at 10 Metro stations in Bengaluru. This, the opposition BJP and JDS has declared, means the ruling Congress is failing to promote the state-run brand, Nandini.

Amul has been given approval to set up the kiosks by the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited, which had floated a tender for this purpose. But the opposition has declared the state should have given those 10 kiosks to Karnataka Milk Federation-run Nandini brand instead.

The Janata Dal (Secular), a former ally of the Congress, took aim at the party and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, in a long X post, with the #SaveNandini hashtag, in Kannada.

The JDS accused Mr Shivakumar of having “sold his self-respect for the sake of commission” and slammed the Congress for having “used the Nandini brand” to win votes in the 2023 Assembly election, in which the party scored a surprisingly big win over the BJP.

“Before the elections DK used to boast that the self-respect of Kannadigas is not for sale… today he has put a stop to milk products for those from other states for the sake of commission.”

“More than 10 Metro stations in Bengaluru have been allowed to sell milk products from outside the state. The Congress used the Nandini brand, the pride of our farmers and all Kannadigas, for its promotion, (and) forgot about it (after the election) …” the JDS said on X.

The BJP’s PC Mohan has also hit out, saying the Congress had “falsely accused the BJP of favouring outsiders” before the election, but had now “enabled” the “outsiders”.

“Ahead of the 2023 Karnataka Assembly election, Congress falsely accused BJP of favouring outsiders. But now, the same Congress government, which oversees BMRCL’s operations and maintenance, has enabled Amul kiosks at 10 Metro stations to displace Nandhini. A classic case of hypocrisy.”

Mr Shivakumar has responded saying Amul had been the only applicant.

However, faced with the backlash from the opposition, the Deputy Chief Minister said the Karnataka Milk Federation would open Nandini outlets in eight of the above 10 Metro stations.

Amul had already opened outlets in two and “it is not appropriate to close down existing outlets”, he said. “We have instructed KMF to submit its application to BMRCL…”

The Amul vs Nandini issue sparked controversy ahead of the 2023 election, with opposition parties accusing the BJP, then in power in the state and at the centre, of trying to undermine Nandini by backing Amul. The Congress turned the issue into a key poll issue.

Now, however, with fresh kiosks allotted, the Nandini vs Amul debate has resurfaced, once again highlighting concerns over support for local farmers and brands.
